Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need a consultant?
If you don't need our services, we'll be the first to tell you! We don't have billable hours goals, sales quotas, or quarterly earnings targets to meet. The best way to find out if we can meet your needs is to schedule a conversation with us and tell us about your work and current challenge. If we can solve your problem without a consulting engagement, we're happy to do so. Sometimes a quick call or being pointed at the right data source or existing analysis is all you need.
How much does it cost?
Most of our engagements are in the $10,000 to $40,000 range but we do some that are smaller and many that are larger! Price varies with your needs, timeline, budget and our capacity. We run lean and keep costs controlled so you are paying for our full skill and attention. If you're not sure what you need, that's fine; we'll help scope it with you.
How long does your work take?
Our clients will tell you that we are fast, nimble, and responsive. We work with you to develop a realistic project timeline and set expectations, and then we'll be sure to meet those timelines.
What kind of contract structure do you use?
Fixed price is our default but we also do per deliverable contracts, monthly retainers, and hourly consulting arrangements. We're big on incentives at Civilytics and we'll walk you through the structure that aligns your incentives and ours to get the best possible result.
Is Civilytics a small business?
Yes, although we like to call ourselves a microbusiness! We are a for-profit LLC registered in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are quite capable at paperwork and have worked on federal, state, and local government contracts requiring a variety of vendor assurances and certifications.
Where do you work?
We have partners across the country. We're based out of the Boston area, but we have worked in just about every region of the United States.
What is your technology stack?
We work with whatever tech stack the client has; we've collaborated using Google Drive, Microsoft Sharepoint and Teams, and shared folders like Dropbox. Internally, we try to use open-source and privacy-first software so we run Nextcloud (Office), Mattermost (Slack), and Gitea (GitHub) to name a few. We have our own data storage and backup infrastructure and can host and secure confidential data with encryption and secure data storage.
